Classroom Practices that Really Make a Difference for Early Learners

September 13, 2012 |  Dr. Robert Pianta, University of Virginia

Improving children’s preparation for school success has become a national priority. Hear from Dr. Pianta how research is indicating the importance of the quality of daily classroom experiences such as interactions with teachers, peers, and learning materials. Different findings about which classroom characteristics most contribute to school readiness can leave program administrators and teachers confused about how to organize their classrooms and focus on teacher practices to support optimum learning and development. The most important next step from these new insights is to redefine what it means for an early childhood education program to be of high quality and how programs can put effective practices in place.

Come and learn about what the challenges and best practices are for helping ensure technology is used in developmentally appropriate ways in early childhood programs.

New Technologies: Emerging Research on Classroom Practices and Outcomes for Early Learners

December 6, 2012 |  Susan Gunnewig and Dr. Dale McManis

New Interactive touchscreen technologies have changed how children and their teachers use ‘computers’. Touchscreen desk/laps, whiteboards, tablets, and tables are making their way into early education classrooms in record numbers. But what does this really mean for classroom practices? And what does the research say about their impact on children’s learning in early childhood settings? In this session we will share results from a recent national survey series with teachers and administrators about interactive technologies on areas such as how much time children spend using them, types of activities, the learning domains/content covered, and how technology is used to support all learners. Then we will look at the emerging scientific research on the impact of interactive technologies on children’s learning. We will break out the features and uses which are being found by research studies to support positive outcomes for early learners, and how to avoid the pitfalls of ‘technology for technology’s sake’.
