Michelle Obama Takes on Child Obesity

by Susan Gunnewig Posted on: January 27, 2010 at 3:03 PM

Our first lady, Michelle Obama, began the new year with remarks regarding the Conference of Mayors in Washington D.C. on January 20, 2010.  During her speech, she reminded us of the terrible problem of child obesity in our country.  “Right now, nearly one-third of children in America are overweight or obese, one in three.  One-third of all children today will eventually suffer from diabetes, and in the African American and Latino communities, it goes up to almost half,Mrs. Obama said alarmingly.  She continued her sober remarks by stating that a study published in December 2009 found that obesity could be an even greater threat to our health than smoking.  Apparently, medical experts are predicting that this generation is on track to live shorter lives.

The first lady called for everyone to join together to address this epidemic.  Instead of television and movie time, encourage more time spent on walks and other outdoor activities. Watch more carefully what children are eating--adults can be role models too!  “Ultimately, it’s going to take all of us--businesses and non-profits; community centers and health centers; teachers and faith leaders; coaches and parents--all working together to help families make common sense changes so our kids can get, and stay healthy.”

I will write more in a future blog what USDA’s My Pyramid is doing to help.
