Exciting Times in Early Childhood Technology

by Susan Gunnewig Posted on: April 9, 2010 at 8:19 AM

On the horizon, we see more and more of new technological advances entering early childhood. Touch capability is now at the forefront for toddlers through prekindergarten. Could it be that the mouse and the keyboard will disappear as did the 8-track and cassette tapes? I think so.

Touch technology is just right for little ones. The personal connection with a child’s finger to a screen involves the very important kinesthetic approach to learning. Children are watching their parents use touch screens on cell phones at home. Many parents are allowing their children to “use” their cell phones to touch and play games. The other day I received a text message from my 4-year old grandson. His mom let him send me a message. It said, “Jj:)” His name is J.J. I responded, “Wow, I love you!” Their 11-month old was sitting on his dad’s lap the other night, and was reaching out to touch the laptop and making noises.
