Early Head Start Home Visitors Get Connected to Developmental Milestones

It's In The Bag - Peek-a-Boo Activity Card

The very busy Early Head Start home visitor requires materials that are easy-to-use, durable and mobile. Most importantly, these materials must have close connections to the very important developmental milestones for infants and toddlers such as those recommended by Zero to Three. Hatch ® has developed seven theme bags to support cognitive and social emotional development. Each theme consists of age appropriate books with read aloud labels, appropriate manipulates and a home visitor activity card. The activity card has the research connections on side-one and step-by-step activities are located on side-two. The home visitor will have clear guidance to encourage use of the manipulatives with the infant or toddler. A “homework” assignment is included so caregivers may continue the development until the home visitor returns.

The themes for infants are touching and peek-a-boo. Toddler themes are shapes, counting, colors, farm and rhyming. Some of the critical concepts found in the themes are cause and effect, object permanence, self-esteem, math concepts and literacy concepts such as language and vocabulary development. The contents of the theme are placed in durable tote bags that easily fit in the car. Everything is in the bag; therefore, the perfect name is “It’s In the Bag!™”
