Happy National Family Literacy Month!

The National Council for Family Literacy (NCFL), a leading national organization guided by a mission to build a more literate and prosperous nation by helping parents and children learn together, announced today that November is National Family Literacy Month! On their website, they kick off a month-long celebration with the release of fun, interactive activities for families to do together to promote literacy in the home. NCFL hopes that these activities will also help tie literacy into two “remarkable and courageous events” that promote pride in our nation’s history.

Please visit http://www.famlit.org/activities to view these free online literacy activities. Children’s engagement with reading at home builds a love for reading and lays a foundation of pre-literacy skills needed to become successful readers in first grade. What I like most about the activity guide is its alignment with the National Early Literacy Panel, Developing Early Literacy, released January 2009.
